I am an Ape-man. Sculptures / Installation

The works featured in the exhibit “I am an Ape man” are ultimately about the aberration of the norm. From the Albino chimp to the figure with three faces, onto the figure in a predicament and ending with the artificial grouping of all the yellow birds from Québec, there is a play on the abnormal - a whirl of wind, a turn of the head, a hole in a form, ripples in a pool of water. All of which occur as circular themes each identifying a certain context for the contemplation of a melancholic and somewhat aberration of a world. In a chance circumstance where the odds favour the unusual and the unpredictable, the artist acts as an extension of this circumstance featured in the double role of “the ape-man”.

Les recherches photographiques actuelles de Yann Pocreau portent sur le développement d’une relation empathique entre les corps et des lieux choisis. Ces lieux sont choisis pour leur histoire latente, sinon pour leur contexte. Ils sont chargés, marqués par l’activité humaine. Par différentes interventions physiques dans ces lieux, l’artiste tente de produire le surgissement des traces de ce contexte latent. Il s’intéresse aussi aux alliages possibles entre écriture et photographie, au potentiel de relais du texte. Il écrit sur l’art actuel pour diverses revues spécialisées (esse, arts+opinions, Espace, Etc, para-para) ainsi que pour des galeries et centres d’artistes autogérés. Il participe à des expositions individuelles et de groupe au Canada et en Europe. Cet été, il exposera son travail à Bruxelles à la Galerie Bortier et fera partie de l’exposition Québec Gold présentée à Reims, en France à l’Ancien Collège des Jésuites et au Palais du Tau du 26 juin 2008 au 24 août 2008.

This work is based on the videographic testimony of the artist Andrea Fasani, arrested during the military dictatorship of the 70s, in Argentina. For the first time, Fasani refers to her confinement in a video made for the Witness archive, directed by Peter Gabriel in 1999.
Taquini appropriates Fasani’s testimony and specifically chooses fragments relating to both personal and collective memory, which are dictated by the director like a prompter.
Granada (Grenade) has been thought of as a backstage, a found video, an exorcism or interrogation that breaks with the tradition of the testimonial genre.
The video received the jury’s First Honourable Mention at the Salón Nacional de Artes Visuales 2005, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in addition to receiving third prize in the video category of the Mamba Award (Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires) Fundación Telefónica. The video belongs to the IVAM, Valencia collection.

The night is the symbol of sleep and death, dreams and fears, love and tenderness, deceptions and conspiracies. It is full of the promise of new beginnings: “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof“(Matthew However, it also provides the backdrop for nightmares and monsters, a space where dark thoughts lurk. It is during the night’s sleep that the subconscious reveals itself. The night acts as a double door: one side opens onto the unknown or fate and the other onto light and a new day.

Les animaux peuplent souvent nos rêves, ils se font dans ceux-ci, symboles des forces cosmiques, matérielles ou spirituelles. Les exemples de leur présence sont multiples. Ces animaux fabuleux sont représentés dans les arts de toutes époques, comme ils le sont dans la mythologie, dans le zodiaque, dans la représentation des Évangélistes, des dieux égyptiens et dans innombrables autres manifestations et ce, depuis la nuit des temps. Enfer, ciel et terre, ils touchent tous les aspects de l’univers. Autant dans le monde du rêve que dans celui de l’art, ils nous informent des aspects complexes de la nature de l’homme. Ils fonctionnent comme des miroirs. La représentation de l’animal nous force à intégrer et à mettre de l’avant ce à quoi elle renvoie : la compassion, l'amour inconditionnel, le courage, la bravoure et contribuent ainsi à l'harmonisation de la Personne dans son intégralité.

L’Abstraction : des points de vue

Gestual, geometric, monochromatic, with organic shapes or motifs drawn from nature that may bring to mind a flower, an eye, an animal or a human figure, abstraction has what is necessary to disrupt the observer’s fervent search for information. In order to explore abstraction as a pictorial genre, we invited six painters to provide their interpretations. By sharing their creative research, they incite the viewer to broaden his or her frame of reference.

Poursuivant son travail de mis en valeur des éléments de la nature qui sculptent l’environnement, Marie Côté propose une série d’œuvres qui cherche à traduire les différents phénomènes sensibles produit par les propriétés physique de l’eau et du vent. Utilisant les médiums tel que la vidéo, le papier et la céramique, l’artiste use de différentes stratégies pour nous faire sentir les traces sur la matière, les effets de lumière et la présence du mouvement de l’air créés par ces éléments. Devant ces œuvres ils nous restent qu’à essayer d’en saisir l’amplitude.

Une image enveloppante et obscure dévoile une série de portraits de sujets éclairés par les petits écrans d’objets électroniques portatifs : téléphones cellulaires, ipods… Ces sources lumineuses ne révèlent que leurs visages qui semblent ainsi flotter dans un espace indéterminé. Ce dispositif confère à l’ensemble un climat d’intimité qui n’est pas sans rappeler l’infinie beauté d’une constellation d’étoiles.
